Xcaret Playa del Carmen: Explore Rivers, Wildlife, and History

Two smiling women posing in front of the colorful Xcaret sign by a lagoon, with lush jungle and macaws in the background.
This theme park in the Riviera Maya has been delighting our visitors for over three decades, offering a unique, world-class experience.

Xcaret is one of those places where culture, nature, and adventure come together beautifully. Where do we begin? With the wonderful underground rivers, where you can swim with the whole family surrounded by stunning natural scenery.

Or the incredible cemetery, the recreated Maya village, and the ancient ruins.

There’s also the aviary, where you can watch majestic giant macaws flying freely. As you explore, you’ll realize the park truly caters to everyone.

The coral reef aquarium is one of the largest in the region, and there’s also a butterfly pavilion and a sea turtle aquarium where you can see these beautiful creatures at different stages of life.

The park offers peaceful beaches and inlets. However, a word of caution: Xcaret has dolphins in captivity. I strongly recommend not supporting this activity, as it contributes to the exploitation of these sensitive animals.

One of my favorite moments is visiting the Scenic Tower for a panoramic 360-degree view.

And no visit is complete without the Xcaret México Espectacular show, a grand performance with more than 300 artists at the Gran Tlachco Theater.

Ticket Options: Choose between Basic and Plus. The Plus ticket includes a buffet meal at specialty restaurants like La Isla or La Cocina Yucateca.

Tips for your visit:

  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring a swimsuit.

  • The park provides lockers.

  • Book round-trip transportation if possible.

  • Open daily from 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM (always double-check before you go).

The Xcaret Water Park is a perfect activity for the whole family, where everyone can take home a great memory of Mexico and Playa del Carmen.

Day Trip to Chichén Itzá from Playa del Carmen

Tourists admiring the massive Chichen Itza pyramid under a dramatic golden sunset sky.
The famous Pyramid of El Castillo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a social media celebrity, where hundreds of tourists take a photo every day to bring home as a memory.

No visit to the Riviera Maya is complete without exploring the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The famous El Castillo pyramid (Temple of Kukulcán) is a marvel of engineering. During the equinox, you can witness the incredible shadow effect of a descending serpent, honoring the god Kukulkan.

A guided tour is highly recommended. It’s often more convenient than driving yourself, and expert guides unlock the site's rich history.

You’ll explore landmarks like the Temple of Warriors, the massive Great Ball Court, and the Sacred Cenote, where ancient Mayan rituals took place.

Most day trips also include a swim in a nearby freshwater sinkhole, such as the famous Ik Kil cenote, and a buffet meal.

Tips for visiting:

  • Be prepared: Wear comfortable clothing, a hat, and bring plenty of water.

  • Rules: Climbing the ruins is strictly forbidden to preserve the structures. Drones and professional video gear are also not allowed.

  • Shopping: It’s a great place to buy authentic crafts directly from Mayan artisans.

  • Hours: Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Visiting these Mayan ruins on your next trip to Playa del Carmen is a must. You’ll uncover the secrets of the amazing Maya culture and immerse yourself in Mexico's ancient history.

Finally, don’t forget to snap an iconic photo with the El Castillo pyramid for your social media!

Stroll Down the Vibrant Quinta Avenida

Three smiling women walking down a lively, illuminated street at night in Playa del Carmen, with shops and string lights overhead.
Quinta Avenida is the main artery of the city and the perfect place for shopping—a place you might love… or hate!

Taking a stroll along the vibrant Quinta Avenida is a must-do when visiting Playa del Carmen. As the pedestrian heartbeat of the city, this lively street is filled with unique shops, colorful souvenir stalls, and plenty of dining options.

It’s the perfect spot to grab a gelato, enjoy street performers, and watch the world go by.Whether you’re hunting for handmade jewelry, looking for a cozy café, or wanting to enjoy live music at a bar, this iconic avenue has something for everyone.

Please avoid taking photos with exotic animals. You might see people offering pictures with lion cubs or monkeys, but please decline; participating in this fosters an industry of animal exploitation.

Exploring the Best Beaches at Playa del Carmen

Two smiling women walking along a white sand beach with turquoise waters and swimmers in the background.
Despite the arrival of sargassum, Playa del Carmen still offers wonderful beaches to enjoy on your next visit.

Let’s be realistic: timing is everything when enjoying the beaches of Playa del Carmen.

While seaweed in Playa del Carmen can be a factor from May to September, the fall and winter months usually bring pristine waters with sargassum arrivals being almost nonexistent.

Classics like Playa Mamitas or Punta Esmeralda are still great, but new contenders for the nicest beach in Playa del Carmen now include Playa 72 (Dog Beach) or the tropical vibe of Playa 38, perfect if you want to experience the local vibe and wild nature with its small natural coves.

Skydiving Playa del Carmen: Views You’ll Never Forget

A smiling woman tandem skydiving with an instructor high above the coastline, with the blue ocean and city visible below.
Not for the faint of heart, skydiving is an experience that tests your entire being, but the amazing view from above and the thrill of the freefall are unparalleled.

Nothing compares to the view from 10,000 feet, taking in the Caribbean Sea in all its glory, framed by the white beaches and the city layout.

It’s a bucket-list adventure you simply have to try. Skydive Mex Playa del Carmen boasts an incredible staff who prioritize your safety while ensuring the vibe remains fun and energetic.

You'll feel the anticipation build as you climb every thousand meters in the plane. Then comes the ultimate rush: the door opens, and you take the leap—securely harnessed to your instructor—plummeting in a freefall at 200 km/h.

It’s easily one of the most thrilling adventures in Playa del Carmen. Take a leap of faith, conquer your fears, and enjoy the rush. You won’t regret it!

Swim in a Cenote in Playa del Carmen

A woman diving into a crystal-clear jungle cenote surrounded by lush vegetation and other swimmers
Take the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim in some of the natural cenotes that the Riviera Maya has to offer.

Swimming in these waters is an unparalleled experience. The Riviera Maya is home to thousands of these freshwater sinkholes, which were considered sacred gateways to the underworld by the Mayans.

When looking for the best cenotes in Playa del Carmen, standout options always include Cenote Cristalino, Cenote Azul, Dos Ojos, and Chaak Tun.

You don’t need to travel far to find the perfect cenote; there are countless hidden gems just minutes from the city—so many that you couldn't visit them all in a lifetime.

With crystal-clear waters and lush jungle surroundings, taking a dip here is an essential activity for your trip.

Snap a Photo at the Iconic Portal Maya in Parque Fundadores

A woman taking a smartphone photo of three smiling friends posing in front of the Portal Maya sculpture during a golden sunset.
From the Papantla Flyers, the spectacular Mayan shows, and the events held here, taking a photo with the Maya Portal statue is at the top of the city's must-do activities.

This is the definitive landmark of Playa del Carmen. Towering over the sand where the city meets the sea, the Portal Maya is a massive bronze archway celebrating Mayan culture.

It depicts two figures guided by a spiral of wind and water, framing the ocean perfectly. No trip is complete without capturing a photo under this impressive sculpture, especially at sunrise when the light is magical.

The statue serves as the gateway to Parque Los Fundadores (Founders Park), the historical heart of the city right off 5th Avenue.

Here, you should also visit the picturesque Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a beautiful church situated right on the avenue featuring a stunning view of the sea.

While you are there, witness the breathtaking ritual of the Voladores de Papantla (Papantla Flyers) swinging from their 30-meter pole.

As evening falls, the energy rises with the Pre-Hispanic Mayan Dancers. Clad in elaborate feathered headdresses and body paint, they perform a mesmerizing spectacle of ancestral music and dance to the beat of heavy drums right on the beach.

Swim with Turtles Akumal: Nature’s Living Aquarium

A smiling woman snorkeling underwater alongside a large sea turtle over a vibrant coral reef with blue water.
Interacting in their natural habitat with these majestic creatures is an unparalleled experience.

For a truly magical wildlife encounter (no tanks involved!), take a short 25-minute trip south to this protected bay. In the Mayan language, the name literally means "Place of the Turtle," and it lives up to its reputation.

The bay is rich in seagrass, attracting huge Green Turtles that come to feed daily in the shallow waters.

Whether you join a guided Akumal turtle tour or rent gear to swim in the designated areas, seeing these gentle giants gliding peacefully next to you in their natural habitat is a humbling experience.

Just remember to respect their space, follow the rules, and use biodegradable sunscreen!

Río Secreto Nature Reserve: The Underground World

Three women wearing helmets with headlamps, goggles, and blue life vests standing inside the Rio Secreto cave surrounded by stalactites.
Río Secreto offers an experience beyond theme parks and beaches for those who enjoy ecotourism.

While the open cenotes are spectacular, Río Secreto Nature Reserve is a journey into another dimension.

This protected area is one of the few underground river systems where you can walk and float through kilometers of caves filled with thousands of intricate stalactites and stalagmites.

Unlike the crowded theme parks, this is a strictly preserved ecosystem. You are guided in small groups through a "Crystal Museum" carved by water over millions of years. It is an intimate, quiet, and almost spiritual experience.

If you want to witness the raw beauty of the Mayan underworld without the artificial lights and crowds, this is non-negotiable.

Frida Kahlo Museum Playa del Carmen: A Tribute to a Legend

A group of smiling women posing for a selfie in front of the blue entrance of the Frida Kahlo Museum.
This museum takes us on an intimate journey through the life of the celebrated yet controversial Mexican artist.

Finding a cultural space in this city feels like a breath of fresh air, and the Frida Kahlo Museum in Playa del Carmen is a truly unique experience.

The first thing that grabs you is the passion of the staff—everyone from the manager to the guides treats the artist's memory with deep respect.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. But the moment my guide began sharing Frida’s story—from her tragic accident to her intense romance with Diego Rivera—all my doubts faded away.

The museum is captivating, featuring incredible lighting effects and a stunning recreation of her bed with the Judas Tadeo skeleton above it.

My favorite part? The interactive design, especially the little "peep-holes" in the walls that reveal intimate dioramas of the artist’s life. Without a doubt, this is a moving, must-visit stop.

3D Museum of Wonders: Where Art Comes Alive.

A woman playfully posing in front of a 3D optical illusion painting of a giant monster claw bursting through a frame.
This museum takes us on an intimate journey through the life of the celebrated yet controversial Mexican artist.

If you’re ready to step inside the canvas, the 3D Museum of Wonders is one of the most fun and interactive attractions in Playa del Carmen.

Here, you can take incredible photos with giant paintings that truly seem to come to life as you pose with them.

The museum is fully air-conditioned, making it an excellent refuge from the intense sun or a perfect activity for unexpected rainy days. The staff is very attentive, and the prices are reasonable—around $35 USD per person.

Pro Tip for Visitors:

  • The museum staff are experts! Don’t hesitate to ask the guides for help taking the best photos, as they know exactly how to pose you and maximize the 3D illusion.

  • Remember to charge your phone or camera—you’ll be taking dozens of pictures!

Make sure to add this mind-bending museum to your itinerary for guaranteed fun and unforgettable photos.

Taquería El Fogón: Home of the Best Tacos Al Pastor in Playa del Carmen

A smiling woman holding a taco and pointing to the bright yellow El Fogón restaurant at night.
One of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen, El Fogón will delight your palate with a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes.

You simply cannot say you've visited Playa del Carmen if you haven't stopped to enjoy some delicious tacos al pastor. El Fogón is an icon of the city, and for decades, it has satisfied the hunger of locals and foreigners alike.

This restaurant is a perfect example of everything that is great about Playa del Carmen: good prices, generous portions, and excellent service.

There are options for all tastes, from tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, and arrachera (flank steak). Plus, the drinks are well-poured (or "strong," depending on the vibe you want to give).

It is a place that never disappoints and definitely helps define this tourist destination with its authentic flavor.

If you want the full breakdown, including the MICHELIN Guide recognition, best things to order, and how to get there, check out our full guide on El Fogón: A Taste of True Mexico.

Explore the Reefs in Cozumel: The 2nd Largest Barrier Reef in the World.

A woman snorkeling over a colorful coral reef teeming with fish in the crystal-clear blue Caribbean Sea.
One of the largest coral reefs in the world, offering wonderful views of the depths of the Caribbean Sea and its marine life.

Just looking at the horizon isn't enough; you have to experience the crossing. Taking the ferry to Cozumel island is a top-rated activity in itself.

The ride, often aboard the famous Ultramar ferries, offers a front-row seat to the breathtaking Caribbean Sea, where you can watch the water shift through mesmerizing shades of turquoise and deep blue right in the middle of the ocean.

Once you arrive, you are standing on the doorstep of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world.

The underwater views here are unparalleled. Swimming among sharks, sea turtles, and vibrant marine fauna is a spectacle that will remain etched in your memory forever.

We strongly recommend scuba diving if you are certified to explore the deeper walls; if not, a snorkeling tour is more than enough to witness this underwater magic.

In short, escaping to this island isn't just a tour; it's a chance to disconnect from the mainland and reconnect with nature in its purest, most vibrant form.

The island is also a world-class destination for athletes, serving as the proud host of the famous IRONMAN competitions. Don't leave the Riviera Maya without crossing this experience off your list.

Mayan Ruins in Tulum: The Most Iconic View in the Riviera Maya.

A blonde woman in a blue dress gazing at the ancient Tulum ruins perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
The unique Mayan ruins on the edge of the sea—don’t forget to take a fantastic photo at sunset.

Visiting the Mayan Ruins in Tulum offers a unique spectacle you won't find anywhere else in the Mayan world: ancient history framed by the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

The main structure, El Castillo, stands proudly on a cliff, creating a contrast of grey stone against blue water that is simply breathtaking. It is the perfect spot for that iconic photo that everyone wants to take home.

We recommend this visit primarily for the view, given that these are the only ruins overlooking the sea in the entire Mayan empire. However, we must be honest: Tulum has earned a bit of a negative reputation lately.

It has become quite costly, and it often feels like you are being nickel-and-dimed for everything.

Be prepared for a multi-step payment process: you now have to pay for access through the new Parque del Jaguar, then purchase the entrance ticket to the archaeological site itself.

Additionally, if you plan to record video with a GoPro or a camera, there is an extra fee for bringing your device inside. It’s a stunning location, but one that requires patience and a prepared wallet.

Coco Bongo Playa del Carmen: The Ultimate Nightlife Experience.

A large group of smiling women posing for a photo in front of the bright, colorful entrance of the Coco Bongo nightclub at night.
An international event with spectacular shows, drinks, and a great atmosphere—you can’t miss it!

To finish your trip with a flourish, there is no better place than Coco Bongo, a venue that perfectly blends the best of Playa del Carmen’s nightlife with world-class entertainment.

I remember visiting for the first time years ago. I went from being a skeptic to a true believer. Everyone talked about Coco Bongo and how fantastic it was, but to me, it sounded like just another cheesy tourist trap. Oh boy, was I wrong.

Once inside, it’s a non-stop party and celebration. With cover after cover of the greatest hits of all time, it is impossible not to get emotionally hooked. Sooner or later, a song will come on that triggers a great memory.

This nostalgia is combined with spectacular lights, sound, and dancers who bear an uncanny resemblance to icons like Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Axl Rose, and The Mask.

As if that weren't enough, between songs there are high-flying acrobatic shows featuring Batman, Spiderman, and the list goes on.

There is a reason it is so acclaimed, and it remains my top recommendation for experiencing the city's nightlife.

Survival Tips for a Great Night:

  • Watch your drink choice: I strongly recommend sticking to beer unless you pay for the Premium Ticket. The standard open bar often serves generic alcohol brands that can cause a nasty hangover the next day.

  • The Golden Rule of Service: Give your waiter a decent tip right at the start of the night. This ensures the drinks keep coming to your table all night long, saving you from making repeated trips to the crowded bar.

Put simply, if you only have one night to experience the nightlife in Playa del Carmen, make it this one. Coco Bongo is unmatched in energy and spectacle, making it, by far, the absolute best option for a night out in the city.
