Las Quekas Playa del Carmen: The Best Quesadillas in Town

Updated: Oct 27

The exterior of Las Quekas is colorful, featuring traditional Mexican hues, a red awning, and a luchador mask next to the logo, adding local flair.
This picturesque establishment offers delicious quesadillas and a variety of traditional Mexican dishes

Las Quekas Playa del Carmen. If you're searching for authentic Mexican food in Playa del Carmen that won't break the bank, take advantage of Las Quekas.

This small culinary gem is renowned for its handmade quesadillas and genuine Mexican atmosphere, providing a taste that will keep you coming back for more.

The Best Quesadillas in Playa del Carmen

On a wooden table, you’ll find two large quesadillas filled with chicharrón prensado, topped with a sope loaded with juicy carne asada.
The quesadillas are large; I ordered two with chicharrón prensado and a sope, and I was delighted. Plus, with an agua fresca, it all came to less than 110 pesos.

The quesadillas at Las Quekas are something special. With handmade tortillas filled with melted Oaxaca cheese and your choice of meat, every bite is a burst of flavor.

For just 25 pesos, you can enjoy a large, generously stuffed quesadilla. My favorite is the chicharrón prensado—a Mexican classic you must try. If you're feeling adventurous, I recommend the flor de calabaza quesadilla.

This squash blossom is a traditional ingredient in Mexican cuisine, offering a delicate and slightly sweet flavor that perfectly complements the Oaxaca cheese.

If you're vegan, you can order a quesadilla without cheese filled with mushrooms and squash blossoms.

Nothing complements your meal better than a refreshing agua fresca. Las Quekas offers traditional Mexican flavors such as tamarind, hibiscus, and horchata.

A Varied and Authentic Menu

Las Quekas has a vibrant interior with a colorful menu and a woman preparing quesadillas on the comal.
Remember to place your order before sitting down; otherwise, you avoid being attended to. Be patient with the women working there—they endure a lot of heat and work hard.

At Las Quekas, you won't just find quesadillas but a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes that will make your mouth water.

There's something for everyone, from huaraches and tacos de guisado to burritos and asada de Puerco (better known in Yucatán as poc chuc).

You can also enjoy quesadillas filled with mushrooms, squash blossoms, rajas, picadillo, potatoes with chorizo, cactus, and now even cochinita pibil, a classic of Yucatecan cuisine.

In addition to quesadillas, the sopes at Las Quekas are a delight. A sope is a thick corn tortilla, slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, topped with beans, meat, cream, cheese, and salsa.

To finish on a high note, Las Quekas also offers a selection of traditional desserts like gelatins, flan, and corn cake. These sweet treats are the perfect way to end your meal with an authentic Mexican touch.

A Place Where Flavor and Price Come Together

Inside Las Quekas, a woman from Chiapas is seen preparing quesadillas by hand at the comal.
The tortillas are handmade with natural corn, not flour, which you can tell by their yellow color and texture. They're a true delight.

Las Quekas is the ideal spot if you're looking for street food in Playa del Carmen that's both authentic and affordable.

Remember to place your order at the counter and pay before sitting down, as service can be slow if you don't follow this routine. The ladies who serve work hard in a hot environment, so remember to leave a tip.

Las Quekas Playa del Carmen: A Must-Visit Destination

A peaceful and serene afternoon unfolds at Las Quekas, where the exterior seating area is sheltered under a vibrant awning.
Although the place is covered with a tarp, it can be warm during the day. However, it becomes much more relaxed in the evening.

Whether you're looking for a quick bite or want to enjoy an authentic Mexican food, Las Quekas is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Playa del Carmen.

With unbeatable prices and a taste that makes you feel at home, this is a place you'll want to return to again and again.

My favorite Las Quekas location is downtown, just a few blocks from Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen. It's at the corner of Avenida 15 and Calle 10 Bis and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please note that they only accept cash.

So, next time you want to explore the best food in Playa del Carmen, stop by Las Quekas and enjoy their delicious quesadillas, sopes, and other dishes. I promise you won't regret it!
