If you ask me where to eat in Playa del Carmen for the first time, there’s no hesitation—I always say El Fogón. This restaurant is a true icon of the city. Its food is not only delicious and generous but also surprisingly affordable.
Over the decades, El Fogón has maintained its consistency, earning its place as one of the few taquerias officially recognized by the MICHELIN Guide México.
In this article, I’ll share why El Fogón is the best restaurant in Playa del Carmen and why you absolutely have to try it.
Savor Some of the Best Tacos in Playa del Carmen

While El Fogón has a wide menu, ranging from fine cuts of meat, quesadillas, arrachera, and grills, we couldn’t start this article without talking about their delicious tacos al pastor.
Priced around $1.50 each, you can enjoy some of the best tacos al pastor in the entire city, with generous portions, rich seasoning, and freshly cooked on the trompo with their characteristic slice of pineapple.
They come perfectly loaded with onion and cilantro, just as they should be traditionally in any taco in Mexico.
I love that they use a double tortilla—it not only tastes better, but it’s also a great value, meaning you don’t need to eat as many tacos as you would at other places to feel full.
And it’s not just tacos al pastor—they also offer sirloin, chorizo, and you can choose between flour or corn tortillas.
Best Authentic Mexican Food in Playa del Carmen

El Fogón in Playa del Carmen offers a variety of authentically Mexican dishes, but one of the most unique is the appetizer of sautéed nopales in chipotle.
This comes included with any order as an appetizer, and honestly, I can’t think of anything more Mexican than good nopales prepared the way only El Fogón knows how.
To give you an idea of what a nopal is, have you seen the Mexican flag? There’s an eagle eating a snake on a cactus—that cactus is called a nopal, and that’s precisely the appetizer El Fogón serves as a courtesy.
Preparing it correctly is key, because it can turn out slimy if not done right, but don’t worry—El Fogón knows how to make it delicious. I highly recommend trying it without hesitation.
Additionally, you’ll also find classic Mexican dishes like frijoles charros, quesadillas with beef or chicken, arrachera, and much more.
Fresh Pineapple Juice and Drinks You’ll Love

El Fogón is everything that’s right about Playa del Carmen and exactly what you should expect from a restaurant in a tourist area.
This is reflected, for example, in the drinks. The cocktails come generously loaded with alcohol, flavorful, and reasonably priced—unlike many other bars or restaurants that serve watered-down drinks, that doesn’t happen here.
Their margaritas pack a punch and are delicious. You can also find beers and spirits, so it’s not just a great place to eat but also to drink.
For me, the star of the show is the pineapple juice by the liter—frothy, refreshing, full of flavor, and 100% natural. When you visit this Mexican restaurant, don’t forget to order your liter of 100% natural pineapple juice—you won’t regret it!
El Fogón Locations: How to Get There

El Fogón has several branches throughout the city, but if you’re in the tourist area, only two locations really matter:
Constituyentes Street at 30th Avenue, next to Mega Soriana.
30th Avenue at 6 Bis, which is my favorite location. It has a very local Playa vibe and is just one block from the downtown Walmart.
Either of these locations is about a 10-minute walk from 5th Avenue. If you’re staying a bit farther away, just ask a taxi to take you—everyone in Playa knows these restaurants, so getting there won’t be difficult at all.
Where to Park When Visiting El Fogón

El Fogón is truly one of a kind because it not only offers great prices and generous portions, but it also provides parking.
We all know how annoying parking in Playa del Carmen can be, and there’s nothing more frustrating than having your car immobilized with a boot. That’s why the fact that El Fogón offers free parking is a real gem.
Don’t forget to ask the staff where to park so you can leave your vehicle safely and enjoy a delicious meal.
El Fogón Playa del Carmen: Business Hours and Local Tips

Another highlight of this fabulous restaurant is its extended hours of service, open from 12 PM until 3 AM. How many times have I gone out partying and stopped by El Fogón to satisfy my hunger after a couple of drinks and a night of dancing?
You’ll rarely leave here hungry. It’s definitely one of the restaurants with the longest hours in the entire city.
During the high season, from late December to the end of May, long lines are common at dinner time, so try to arrive earlier, around 6 pm.
Best Place to Eat in Playa del Carmen: El Fogón

Because of its family-friendly atmosphere, great prices, generous portions, convenient parking, and extended hours of service, El Fogón in Playa del Carmen is, without a doubt, the best restaurant in the city.
But that’s not all—it’s a place that truly defines what Playa del Carmen is all about: the service, the ambiance, and the experience. It’s no wonder it’s considered an icon of the city.
Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or your partner, it’s the first place you should go to satisfy your hunger.
